C'mon Everybody

MAD magazine once had a great spoof on rock and roll. It showed a picture of Rudy Vallee in a suit and tie looking very svelte. Next was Sinatra. The look was a bit more raunchy, the hair a bit more dishevelled, and the knot of the tie was loosened so it hung below the collar. Next was Presley. The hair was flying, the pose was an invitation to the bedroom, and the eyes glinted with wild abandon. Finally there was a picture of a chimp banging on the strings of a guitar. This was to be the… Continue

War games

I wonder if there is something primordial in the genes of those who attended boys' schools that places them on the equivalent of a war footing. Watching some of the "lockup" prison episodes on TV here in the US, perhaps there is something to this theory. In a real prison you have to watch your back, be careful how you look at people, and quickly figure out the hierarchy. Failure to do so could be death. OK, in spite of Rowan Atkinson's portrayal of a school master informing a distraught parent t… Continue

The good book

There once was a book that rivaled the Bible in number of copies printed and ubiquity. It was owned by virtually every boy at school. It was called Four-Figure Tables, by Godfrey and Siddons.

Charles Godfrey (1873-1924) and Arthur Warry Siddons (1876-1959) were mathematics masters in England. Both were educated at St. Edward's School, Birmingham, and both went up to Cambridge. Godfrey was at Trinity in 1892 and then joined the teaching staff at Winchester. Siddons was at Jesus in 1895 and joine… Continue

Mansfield High School Hymn

Pilgrim's Progress, written by John Bunyan in 1684.

He who would valiant be ’gainst all disaster,
Let him in constancy follow the Master.
There’s no discouragement shall make him once relent
His first avowed intent to be a pilgrim.

Who so beset him round with dismal stories
Do but themselves confound - his strength the more is.
No foes shall stay his might; though he with giants fight,
He will make good his right to be a pilgrim.

Since, Lord, Thou dost defend us with Thy Spirit,
We know we at the end, shall life inherit.
Then fancies flee away! I’ll fear not what men say,
I’ll labor night and day to be a pilgrim.

Mansfield's School Prayer

As remembered by John Searle (Mansfield 1954)

Creator of life and light,
We praise thee this day for the beauty of thy world,
for sunshine and flowers,
storm-cloud and starry night,
for the radiance of dawn and the last smoldering calm of the sunset.

We thank thee for physical joys,
for the ecstasy of swift motion, for deep water to swim in,
For the goodly smell of rain on dry ground,
for hills to climb and hard work to do,
for all the skill of hand and eye,
for music that lifts our hearts in one breath to heaven,
for the grasp of a friend,
for the gracious loveliness of children,

for all these thy sacraments of beauty and joy,
we thank thee our Lord and God.
